Dental Implant Procedure - What to Expect

Placement of a dental implant occurs in a few steps. The first step requires a consultation to consider whether or not your mouth is capable of supporting a dental implant. If you are cleared, then the next step becomes the placement.

Placement begins with a titanium implant that is carefully placed into your gums. After this, it will take several weeks for a process known as Osseo integration for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. Afterwards, you will be scheduled in for the placement of an abutment where a dental crown is placed on top of for a complete, aesthetically pleasing tooth.

  • Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am a good candidate for dental implants?

A consultation with a dental implant dentist is the best way to determine this through examination and X-rays. However, please refer above to our section on “Are you a good candidate for dental implants?”

Will I need a ride to and from my appointment?

Yes. Because you will be under anesthesia we strongly recommend a friend or family member assist you to and from your dental implant placement appointment as it takes several hours for the effects from anesthesia to completely wear off.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants should be treated like regular, real teeth. With proper care and maintenance dental implants can last a lifetime.

    Is the procedure painful?

No because we use anesthesia during the procedure to ensure no pain in felt. You may experience slight discomfort post-op, but pain medication is typically all that is needed to provide relief.

Are there other ways of replacing missing teeth?

Yes. Dental bridges and dentures are other options to replace teeth. But dental implants are currently the best option because of their durability due to a process known as Osseo integration.
